Where to Find Freelance Writing Jobs Without Spending a Fortune

Where do aspiring creators find freelance writing jobs, anyway? We’ve all been there, refreshing the same job boards over and over, wondering if we should give up and buy yet another job services subscription for access to employers who will actually pay us.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of places to find freelance writing jobs, but all of the pages I have listed below are reputable and free. There are certain others I have deliberately chosen not to include, either because they are only partially free, or because I’ve spent lots of time checking them out and they don’t meet my definition of quality, paying work.

This list does not focus on sites which pay writers to contribute to them directly. There are plenty of such publishers out there, though, in almost any niche.

It should be noted that while some sites, such as LinkedIn and Virtual Vocations, did meet my standards for paid freelance writing job opportunities, they are known to gatekeep in the form of tiered subscriptions. There’s nothing especially wrong with that business model, if you’re willing to pay for it, but for purposes of this freelance writing jobs list, I’ve worked to avoid promoting payment traps as much as possible.

Craigslist

Crazy but true: Lots of legitimate people still advertise for help on this free classifieds site, so you might as well check it out now and then. It’s also easy to post an ad listing your services. Select your country and nearest city to get started.

Facebook

I find many of my leads through social media now. Don’t forget the “networking” part of “social networking.” Make connections in your field and look for ideas, requests, and ads throughout the site: on classifieds, in your newsfeed, in groups, on targeted pages, and in your friends’ posts.

Journalism Jobs

I found my last media job here. Search by keyword, select all, or choose freelance listings only to narrow your hunt.

Poynter Online

This site is all about grooming media professionals, so you’ll have better luck if you’re looking for a serious commitment, but you’ll find the occasional freelance gig here too. Also allows resume posting.

ProBlogger

This was once THE go-to place for serious paid blogging work, but jobs are limited and fill up fast.

The Work at Home Woman
Long-running site that focuses on women in the work-from-home and remote spaces.

The Site Formerly Known as Twitter, or X Who Shall Not Be Named

It’s a love-hate relationship for me, but there’s no denying that a lot of assigning editors are active on Twitter. These days, it’s a legitimate place to hunt for work.

We Work Remotely
This one charges a steep rate for ads, but offers jobseekers the opportunity to preview their remote work offerings free of charge.
